The purpose of the job is to provide Naval Architecture & Design Engineering support to the Surface Ship Systems Design team.

As a Small Craft Design Engineer / Naval Architect, you will be working within a multi-functional team participating in a wide range of design activities from concept through to delivery, providing solutions in support of bids, research and development and in-service support whilst conducting tasks such as structural and stability analysis.

Your main responsibilities as a Small Craft Design Engineer / Naval Architect will involve:

  • Conducting engineering / naval architecture tasks such as structural analyses, stability analyses, inclining experiments and concept design and provide technical guidance to other team members in different areas within the business.
  • Carry out detailed 3D modelling and 2D drawings of small craft systems for a wide range of products from small components to whole vessel systems.
  • Provide sound estimates for engineering work carried out and liaise with sub-contract manufacturers and suppliers regarding design solutions.
  • Ensuring that work is undertaken in accordance with Company, Safety, Environmental and contractual policy.
  • Drafting, vetting and editing technical reports or other documents relevant to, or required by, a particular task in order to ensure that technical findings can be successfully communicated with recipients.
  • Participating in the preparation and submission of technical proposals and tenders as directed by bid the manager in order to provide costed proposals for future work under the authority of the SDA.

Knowledge, skills and personal qualities
Required

  • Qualified to degree level in Naval Architecture / Small Craft Design.
  • Small Craft Design Standards (IMO, MCA, ISO, DefStan, LR, DNV Classification Society Rules)
  • Small Craft Systems Design
  • Vessel Powering and Performance Analysis.
  • Stability Analysis (Maxsurf)
  • 3D modelling, (Rhino, Solid Edge) 2D Drafting Knowledge and Experience.
  • Composite Design.
  • Structural analysis, both theoretical and using FEA,
  • Knowledge of commercial and/or military small craft.
  • Demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to enable effective interaction and work across multi-disciplinary teams, of various knowledge and skills, both internally and externally.
  • Able to build rapport and develop working relationships with a strong team focus.
  • Ability to use own initiative when working independently and under pressure.
  • Strong time management skills with the ability to prioritiseand manage personal workloads in a structured plan, aligning with project milestones, and ensuring deadlines are achieved.
  • Capable of working in dynamic projects without supervision.
  • Willingness to travel in the UK and overseas.

Key accountabilities
Support to the Systems Design Team within the Surface Ship Systems Division:

  • Translating customer requirements into vessel specifications and design particulars.
  • Understanding and applying relevant Classification Society Rules, Industry Regulations, and Legal requirements.
  • Review of preliminary designs arrangements.
  • Hull resistance predictions and propulsion performance estimates.
  • Managing weights & centres, and general stability information.
  • Leading discrete design tasks in relation to current projects as directed by project Design Authority. This will be wide-ranging and cover everything from developing detailed information, to supporting design decisions, to preparing material for formal reviews.
  • Supporting Product Managers with collating information for product specifications.
  • Working with Design Authorities and Product Managers to develop and maintain product roadmaps.
  • Supporting our Sales Team during bidding activities for future project opportunities, specifically preparing technical information, writingtechnical descriptions and reviewing bid documents prior to submission.
  • Attending client and supplier meetings.
  • Attending and supporting equipment tests and sea trials.
